보통 can’t는 ‘~을 할 수 없다’라는 의미로만 알고 있다. 그러나 그 이외의 다양한 쓰임새가 있다.

1. can’t make it : ~ 갈 수 없다.

ex) I can’t make it tonight. : 오늘 밤 난 갈 수 없어.

Why didn’t you come to the class?

Re) I’m sorry, Something just came up, so I couldn’t make it. : 미안해요, 일이

생겨 못 갔어요.

Can you make the meeting? : 회의에 올 수 있어요?

 

2. can’t wait : 도저히 못 기다리겠어, 너무 기대돼 -> 매우 기대할 때 쓰는 표현

wait + to 부정사 혹은 wait for + 명사가 올 수 있다.

ex) I can’t wait to go on a trip. : 그 여행이 너무 기대돼.

I can’t for the trip. : 그 여행이 정말 기대돼.

I can’t for tonight. : 오늘 밤이 정말 기대돼.

I can’t for that. : 그게 정말 기대돼.

 

3. can’t stand + 대명사/명사/동명사 : 못 참겠다, 안 되겠다, 못 봐주겠다.

ex) I can’t stand it anymore. : 더는 못 참겠어.

I can’t stand what you are saying. : 네 말 더는 못 들어 주겠어.

I can’t stand working with him anymore. : 그와 더는 일 못 하겠어.

I can’t stand being treated like this. : 이런 대우는 더는 참을 수 없어.

 

4. can’t help + 명사/ 동명사 : ~ 하지 않을 수 없다.

ex) I can’t help it. : 나도 어쩔 수 없어.

I can’t help thinking of you. : 네 생각을 안 할 수 없어/네 생각만 나

I can’t help but think. : 생각 안 할 수 없어.

I can’t help but laugh. : 웃을 수밖에 없어 -> but은 예외로 사용 가능

 

5. can’t afford ~ : ~할 여유가 없다. - > 주로 돈 혹은 시간 등

ex) I can’t afford the car. : 그 차를 살 여유(돈)가 없어.

I can’t afford to buy the house. : 그 집 살 돈이 없어.

 

6. can’t tell ~ : ~ 을 구별할 수 없다.

ex) I can’t tell the difference. : 난 그 차이를 구별할 수 없어.

I can’t tell between this and that. : 난 이것과 저것의 차이를 모르겠어.

I can’t tell which is better. : 어떤 게 좋은지 모르겠어.
